This study explores the detailed themes of identity, belonging, and cultural dislocation as presented in Ruskin Bond's seminal work, The Room on the Roof. The novel, set in postcolonial India, follows the journey of Rusty, a young Anglo-Indian boy, as he navigates the complexities of adolescence and self-discovery against a backdrop of cultural contrasts. Employing a qualitative analytical approach, this research delves into the protagonist's emotional and psychological landscape, highlighting how Bond's narrative style, characterized by vivid imagery and poignant characterization, deepens the exploration of these themes. Through a careful examination of Rusty’s relationships with his Indian friends and his connection to his British heritage, the study reveals the duality of belonging and alienation experienced by individuals in a multicultural society. The findings indicate that Bond’s portrayal of Rusty's struggle is not merely a personal journey but a reflection of broader societal issues, including the impact of colonial history on personal identity. Ultimately, this paper underscores the significance of understanding cultural hybridity and the fluid nature of identity in a rapidly changing world, advocating for an appreciation of diversity as a vital aspect of self-discovery.
